Contamination Control Strategy (CCS) has become a central expectation under EU GMP Annex 1, requiring organizations to demonstrate how contamination risks are understood, controlled, monitored, and continuously managed across sterile manufacturing operations. While many facilities already maintain environmental monitoring programs, sterilization controls, aseptic procedures, investigations, and quality systems, Annex 1 increasingly expects these activities to function as part of an integrated contamination control approach rather than as separate compliance programs. Questions often emerge around how individual controls connect, how contamination risks are evaluated across the manufacturing lifecycle, and whether existing systems collectively support sterility assurance.
This session examines CCS from an operational perspective, focusing on how sterilization activities, environmental monitoring programs, aseptic operations, investigations, and risk management practices function together within modern sterile manufacturing environments. Practical examples will be used to explore how contamination control decisions are supported, how weaknesses develop across interconnected systems, and how organizations can build more effective and defensible contamination control programs under Annex 1 expectations.
A facility may have acceptable environmental monitoring results, validated sterilization processes, trained operators, approved procedures, and completed investigations. Yet observations continue to occur because regulators increasingly review contamination control as a connected system rather than a series of individual programs. Under Annex 1, evidence supporting sterility assurance is expected to extend beyond individual controls and demonstrate how risks are understood and managed across the broader operation.
CCS places increasing emphasis on understanding the relationships between monitoring data, sterilization activities, aseptic practices, facility controls, investigations, and operational behavior. Decisions made in one area can influence risk in another long before a quality event occurs. This session focuses on how those relationships are evaluated in practice and how organizations build confidence that contamination risks remain controlled throughout the sterile manufacturing lifecycle.
